KNAB publishes pre-election spending limits for 2009 elections

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau has published the maximum amount which a political party cannot exceed for expenditures incurred during the pre-election period starting from 7 February till 6 June 2009 – the day of local government and European Parliament elections in Latvia.

After assessment of the Latvian Criminal Law compliance with requirements of international conventions, the Group of States against Corruption (hereinafter – GRECO) has recommended Latvia by April 2010 to criminalise bribery of arbitrators and of those employees of state and municipal institutions which are not public officials under Criminal Law, as well as to establish a criminal liability in those bribery cases where a benefit is given to a third person and not to a public official.
KNAB detained public officials of the JSC Riga Central Market (a/s „Rīgas Centrāltirgus”) for misuse of office

After long term operational activities officials of the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) detained the Chairperson of the Board of the Riga municipality’s JSC Riga Central Market (a/s „Rīgas Centrāltirgus”) on 9 December 2008 suspecting her in misuse of office. Within these criminal proceedings were detained three other persons – lawyer of the JSC Riga Central Market – member of the procurement commission and two private persons.
KNAB invites businesses to express views on draft amendments to procurement procedures

Considering that amendments to the Law on Public Procurement adopted at the Committee of the Cabinet of Ministers on 27 October 2008 considerably increases corruption risks and given the present economic situation can undermine fair competition creating unequal conditions for businesses, the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) invites businesses to express their views and make suggestions relating to proposed amendments in the public procurement rules.
KNAB concerned about possible increase of corruption risks related to amendments in the Procurement law

KNAB suggests starting prosecution against 12 persons in relation to bribery at the customs checkpoint Terehova

KNAB suggests bringing charges against an investigator of Financial Police and four businessmen in relation to a 15 000 LVL bribe

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) has sent to the Prosecution Service of Riga court district materials of criminal proceedings initiated in April 2008 related to demand of a 15 000 LVL bribe. The investigator of KNAB suggests starting criminal prosecution against a senior investigator of the Financial Police Department of the State Revenues Service (FPD) and four businessmen acting in the interests of the bribe-taker.
KNAB detains a prosecutor for extorting a bribe

On 17 October 2008 the Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau (KNAB) as part of initiated criminal proceedings has detained a prosecutor of the Jurmala city for extorting a bribe. In cooperation with the Prosecutor General Office, KNAB also conducted the emergency procedural activities.
KNAB suggests holding criminally liable seven persons in relation to bribery in Riga City Council

KNAB finalises investigation into gifts received by Valdis Zatlers

The Corruption Prevention and Combating Bureau has finished the investigation into the facts to check whether by accepting gifts (gratuities) for doctor’s work Valdis Zatlers as a public official and as Chairman of the Council of the State Limited Liability Company „Hospital of Traumatology and Orthopaedics” was respecting the requirements of the law „On Prevention of Conflict of Interest in the Activities of Public Officials”.
